Microbial communities as biosensors for monitoring urban environments

چکیده
The BE microbiome is a naturally embedded biosensor in urban infrastructure that can be used to monitor environmental quality and human activity. There are many potential opportunities for leveraging BE microbial communities to guide urban design and public health policy.

Innovative biological approaches for monitoring and improving water quality
Water quality is largely influenced by the abundance and diversity of indigenous microbes present within an aquatic environment. Physical, chemical and biological contaminants from anthropogenic activities can accumulate in aquatic systems causing detrimental ecological consequences. Approaches exploiting microbial processes are now being utilized for the detection, and removal or reduction of ...
متن کاملTree Leaf Bacterial Community Structure and Diversity Differ along a Gradient of Urban Intensity
Tree leaf-associated microbiota have been studied in natural ecosystems but less so in urban settings, where anthropogenic pressures on trees could impact microbial communities and modify their interaction with their hosts. Additionally, trees act as vectors spreading bacterial cells in the air in urban environments due to the density of microbial cells on aerial plant surfaces. Characterizing ...
متن کاملMicrobial Biosensor for Marine Environments
A biosensor is an analytical device which integrates a biological recognition element with a physical transducer to generate a measurable signal proportional to the concentration of the analyses. A microbial biosensor consists of a transducer in conjunction with immobilized viable or non-viable microbial cells. Non-viable cells obtained after Permeable or whole cells containing periplasmic enzy...
متن کاملSoil microbial communities are shaped by vegetation type and park age in cities under cold climate.
Soil microbes play a key role in controlling ecosystem functions and providing ecosystem services. Yet, microbial communities in urban green space soils remain poorly characterized. Here we compared soil microbial communities in 41 urban parks of (i) divergent plant functional types (evergreen trees, deciduous trees and lawn) and (ii) different ages (constructed 10, ∼50 and >100 years ago). The...
متن کاملThe effects of crude oil on marine microbial communities in sediments from the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea: A microcosm experiment
Changes in the microbial community in response to catastrophic oil spills in marine and fresh water environments have been well documented. Molecular methods provide tools for analyzing the entire bacterial community, covering also those bacteria that have not been cultured in the laboratory. In this study, four different microcosms were set up containing sediments collected from the Persian Gu...
